One night, in a house that is a very abandoned and finished property where Noah takes Allie to show his intention to remodel it to live together, Noah and Allie are late making love until the wee hours of the morning, Allie’s parents call to the police to look for her. Knowing this, through a friend of Noah, he takes her immediately to his house, where Allie is harshly rebuked by his mother, despising Noah at all times and severely opposing their relationship, Allie rebels at all times insisting that he will not leave it. Noah listens to everything and leaves the house to retire and Allie runs after him and apologizes. He tells her that he understands him and that he has to go, and makes her see that she has a life ahead of him with things that he can never give her; She insists that she loves him and accompanies him to where she will go. Noah tells him that it is not time to respond and that they still have the summer to think about it; Allie interprets this as that he wants to finish with her and they break even though she finally regrets and asks him not to leave. Allie’s family leaves Seabrook the next morning; Before this, Allie, before leaving, goes to look for Noah at work but can not find him and asks his best friend to tell him that they never finished, that he loves him and will never stop loving him and gives him his address. When his friend tells Noah everything, he runs to look for her at home, and realizes the reality. Desolate, Noah writes a letter to him every day during a year, which when receiving them the mother of Allie hides. Allie believing that Noah never wrote to him and he did not receive any response from her, he decides to send her one last letter and they forget each other.
Noah moves to Atlanta to work for a while and during World War II , when Pearl Harbor is attacked, he enlists in the army and goes to fight Europe with his best friend who dies in combat. While Allie studies at the university and volunteers as a nursing assistant for wounded soldiers, there she meets Lon Hammond, Jr. ( James Marsden ), a handsome, charming man from a wealthy family with whom he initiates a romance that Allie’s parents approve, then Lon and Allie commit themselves.
Meanwhile, Noah who returned home, finds out that his father is selling his current home, after the death of his father Noah buys the Old Windsor (the old abandoned house that Noah promised Allie to restore so they could live together). Noah travels to Charleston , South Carolina, to process the remodeling permit and when he arrives he sees from the truck Allie walking down the street. He follows her until he enters a restaurant where he sees Allie and Lon kissing. Devastated, Noah restores the old house, believing that if he keeps his promise, Allie will return. Once the house is finished, Noah takes a photo for the newspaper to try to sell it, but not in the end he can do it.
In the present, it is clear that the old lady is Allie and that the narrator is Noah. However, she does not remember anything and does not recognize her children and grandchildren due to her dementia.
The film returns to the year 1947 . In the preparations for their wedding, Allie tries on her wedding dress in the company of her mother and friends and when they read in the newspaper the news of her engagement, Allie happens to see Noah in the article about her house and faints. After reflecting a little, he decides to visit him. When she arrives and they meet again, she makes it clear that she is getting married, Noah respects her decision and he and Allie coexist amicably, they talk about their memories together, and when the time comes for Allie to leave, Noah asks her to come back the next day, since you have a surprise reserved for you.
The next day, Noah takes Allie to the lake in a canoe and they start talking. On the way back to the house and under heavy rain, Allie gets angry and asks Noah why he never wrote to her. He tells her that if he had done it and wrote her a letter every day for a year, surprised and despite that tells him that it is too late to relive his love, he replies that he is not and they kiss passionately and go home to make love and Allie is convinced that he loves Noah.
After two days of passion, Allie’s mother appears while Noah is out and tells her daughter that her fiancé Lon is aware that he is with Noah because his father told him and followed her to Seabrook. Allie’s mother takes her away and tells her that she also had a summer love with whom she tried to escape. His love did not work and in the end everyone took separate paths; However, she is still visiting the quarry where she works, watching from afar, wondering how different her life would be from marrying him. Once he brings her back to Noah’s house, Allie’s mother hands her daughter the bundle of 365 letters that Noah had written to her, telling her that she waits for him to make the right decision.
Allie explains to Noah that Lon is in the city and that the last days have been wonderful, but that he has been very irresponsible. Noah, furious, accuses her of loving Lon only for his money, and tells him that if he leaves, he will hate her forever. He tells her that if he really wants to be with Lon, then he should leave, because he once lost her and is ready to lose her again; but before he leaves Noah encourages her to make a decision of her own, a decision that is not conditioned on the opinion of her parents, her fiancé, or himself. Confused and unable to make a decision, Allie leaves.
Distressed, Allie stops her car, reads Noah’s farewell letter and then drives to the hotel where Lon is staying, so she can talk to him about what happened. Allie knows she has to be with Lon, which means she’s going to stay with him. However, the picture changes for Noah, who hears a noise coming from a car outside. When he gets up, he sees Allie, who has apparently left Lon to go back with him.
Returning to the present, Allie realizes that she and Noah are the protagonists of the story. They spend a few minutes until he falls back into oblivion and starts screaming and pushing Noah again. That same night Noah looks at the books and the audience discovers that Allie wrote the book with this message written on the front: “Read this to me, and I will come back to you every time.” Noah also looks at a photo album, which tells the audience that Noah and Allie got married, had children and lived a wonderful life together.
The next morning, the nurse finds Noah in a critical situation. He is saved from his heart attack and sneaks into Allie’s room when he returns from the hospital, although it is forbidden to see her. She wakes up and is able to remember Noah and asks if his love is strong enough to work miracles and take them together. Noah tells her that their love can do whatever they want to do and will never abandon it.
The film ends with a flock of birds flying over the lake where Noah and Allie revived and made their love more powerful.
