Harry Benson, a brilliant computer scientist with an IQ of 144, is in his 30s and suffers from epilepsy. His seizures often lead to blackouts, during which he wakes up in unfamiliar places with signs of violent behavior. He also has delusions that computers will revolt against humans.

Benson’s Battle with Acute Disinhibitory Lesion Syndrome

Suffering from Acute Disinhibitory Lesion syndrome, Benson agrees to undergo an experimental psychosurgical procedure called “Stage Three.” This involves the implantation of electrodes in his brain to detect the beginning of a seizure and deliver an electrical impulse to stop it. However, his psychiatrist, Janet Ross, is against the surgery, fearing that it will lead to further psychosis as Benson’s identity merges with that of a computer, a concept he distrusts.

Initially, the surgery seems successful. But, soon after the operation, it becomes clear that Benson’s brain has become dependent on the electrical impulses. The seizures occur more frequently, leading to a continuous cycle. If left unchecked, Benson will remain in a perpetual blackout state, accompanied by his violent tendencies.

The Escape and Pursuit

Realizing the dire situation, Ross tries to intervene, but Benson escapes from the hospital. Despite his unpredictable violent outbursts, his intellect allows him to evade the authorities for an extended period. At one point, he even confronts Ross in her own home, showcasing his cognitive abilities amidst his erratic behavior.

As he flees, Benson finds himself in a cemetery, falling into an open grave. A group approaching the grave spots him holding a gun and alerts the police. Ross rushes to the scene, begging Benson to accept her help. However, before she can reach him, a police helicopter shoots him as he attempts to raise his weapon.
