Midnight Express Full Movie: An American College Student’s Desperate Escape

On vacation in Istanbul, Turkey, on 6 October 1970, American college student Billy Hayes decides to take a risk that will change his life forever. He straps 2 kg (4.4 lb) of hashish bricks to his chest, hoping to smuggle them back to the US. However, as he and his girlfriend Susan prepare to board a plane, they encounter soldiers on high alert for terrorist threats.

Billy is frisked by the soldiers, who discover the drugs, leading to his arrest by the police. He is strip-searched and taken to a police station, where he meets a mysterious American named “Tex” with a thick Texan accent. Billy, desperate to get out of trouble, claims he bought the hashish from a taxi driver and offers to help the police locate him in exchange for his release. However, his offer falls on deaf ears as the police have no intention of letting him off the hook.

As Billy tries to escape, he is recaptured at gunpoint by Tex, who seems to have his own motives. In jail, Billy faces a nightmarish reality of brutality and violence. He is beaten by the chief guard, Hamidou, for trying to steal a blanket to keep warm.

Transferred to Sağmalcılar Prison, Billy meets other Western prisoners, including Jimmy, a fellow American, Max, an English heroin addict, and Erich, a Swedish drug smuggler. Jimmy warns Billy of the dangers in the prison, where no one can be trusted, not even children.

The Trial and Resentencing

During his trial, the prosecutor makes a strong case against Billy for drug smuggling. Despite the lead judge’s sympathy towards him, Billy is sentenced to four years for drug possession. His father and his lawyer try to find solace in the sentence, knowing that the initial life sentence suggested by the prosecutor was avoided.

As Billy’s release date approaches, he learns that his sentence has been overturned on appeal, and he is resentenced to serve 30 years. Desperate and feeling betrayed, he joins Jimmy and Max in a risky escape attempt through the prison tunnels, which ultimately fails.

Desperation and Escape

As the situation in the prison worsens, Billy’s mental and physical health deteriorates. After a violent confrontation with an informant prisoner, Rifki, Billy reaches his breaking point. With the help of his girlfriend Susan, who visits and leaves him a scrapbook with hidden money, Billy finds the strength to plan his escape.

In a final act of desperation, Billy confronts Hamidou, the chief guard, and in a struggle, accidentally kills him. Disguised in the guard’s uniform, Billy bluffs his way out of the prison, using his knowledge of the Turkish language to flee to freedom.
