Kora and her allies—Gunnar, Tarak, Nemesis, Titus, and Milius—return to her and Gunnar’s village on Veldt, believing that Atticus Noble, whom she had killed, is dead and that her group had prevented the Imperium’s return to the village to claim its surplus grain supply. Aris, a double agent working for the village and the Imperium, informs them that the Imperium is set to arrive in five days. The fighters join the villagers to harvest the grain supply in three days, intending to use the flour as leverage to deter the Imperium from bombing the village. Over the remaining two days, Titus intends to train the villagers to fight.

Kora and Gunnar become lovers, and she confesses that Balisarius had forced her involvement in his assassination of the Motherworld’s royal family, with Kora herself shooting its princess, Issa. Balisarius had tried to frame her for the coup, leading her to flee to Veldt in an Imperium dropship to escape the law.

As the group trains the villagers in combat and prepares a plan involving digging trenches, planting explosives, and readying Kora’s dropship, they also share their pasts with each other. Kora refrains from revealing her role in the royal family’s assassination. When Noble’s forces arrive and threaten the village’s women and children, Kora surrenders to save them, but Gunnar triggers an ambush and flees with her.

The Battle Unfolds

Titus and Tarak lead the village in repelling the first wave of Imperium troops, with Nemesis sacrificing himself to protect the women and children. The second wave, heavily armored and mechanized, pushes the remaining defenders back and devastates much of the village. Kora and Gunnar infiltrate Noble’s dreadnought, planting explosives on its power source to bring it down. Gunnar sacrifices himself in the ensuing fight, and Kora defeats Noble with his help.

Devra Bloodaxe and her rebel forces arrive to eliminate the remaining Imperium troops on Veldt as the village mourns its losses. Kora reveals her past to the group, including her actions in the royal family’s assassination. Titus discloses that Issa is alive, and they vow to locate her and oppose Balisarius, the Motherworld, and the Imperium.
