In the distant future, Earth is under the rule of the United Citizen Federation, a military regime established to restore order after democracy and social scientists led civilization to the brink of collapse. Citizenship is earned through federal service, granting individuals privileges such as voting and reproduction that are denied to civilians. Humanity has expanded throughout the galaxy via interstellar travel, encountering a formidable adversary known as the Arachnids, or “bugs” as they are derogatorily called.

Despite his parents’ disapproval, Johnny Rico, a young athlete, enlists as a mobile infantryman to stay close to his girlfriend Carmen Ibanez, a talented spaceship pilot. When Carmen ends their relationship and pursues a fellow pilot, Rico is devastated.
